The Seaman's Institute Dock View Road 1905.The Institute was only partly built when it was opened by Lord Windsor in August 1905. Built in Ruabon Brick it's still a stunning building today. It was built to provide recreational rooms, a billiard room, baths and a church for visiting seamen. In 1905 Barry boasted it was the world's largest exporter of coal, with over 3,250 visiting ships and 40,000 seamen engaged and discharged in Barry in 1904. The Institute provided an alternative to the hotel bars, theatres and more bawdy entertainment available in Barry.
