Having twice been sunk by the Germans – once in the First World War (when he was severely scalded) and again in the Second World War – you could say that South Shields-born Merchant Navy seaman John Ferguson Aikenhead was an unlucky sailor.

Yesterday we told how South Shields-born merchant seaman John Ferguson Aikenhead survived horrific scalding injuries after the ship he was serving on was sunk during the First World War.

Today, Alan Clark, explains how his grandfather, now serving as an engineer aboard the SS Gracefield in the Second Word War, again fell foul of the German navy.
