UK MILITARY’S CARGO-CARRIER “ANVIL POINT” PASSES PENARTH PIER
An unusual ship passing thisway this afternoon was the “Roll-On – Roll-Off” heavy-lift military cargo vessel “Anvil Point”. She’s one of six “sealift” ships originally acquired under a PFI contract by the UK Government for use as naval auxiliaries to the British armed forces. “Anvil Point” and her sister ships were designed by Houlder Ltd for the strategic transport of military cargoes and vehicles and were leased by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) on a 22-year-long charter from a private company, Foreland Shipping, which actually owns the vessels. The crew – although merchant navy personnel – can be required to work under the Armed Forces Act 2006 rather than the Merchant Navy Code of Conduct, – and in a hot conflict could be classed as “combatants” .
