“The Immortal Arctic Convoy”

GOOD AFTERNOON! The St. Petersburg regional social organization “The Arctic Allied Convoys” is preparing an international project “The Immortal Arctic Convoy” to commemorate VE Day on 9th of May 2019. This project is taking place in St. Petersburg from the 7th until 12th May 2019.

We are cordially inviting descendants of Arctic Convoy veterans (aged 18-35) to join us for this commemoration. The main event of our project is descendants’ participation in the “Immortal Regiment” march, where they will bring photos of their ancestors in memory of their feats as part of the Arctic convoys.

Accommodation. All the participants of the event will live with family members of Arctic Convoy members in St. Petersburg.

Meals and cultural program: Our organization will cover the costs of meals and cultural program.

Purchase of the tickets and visa support. Participants will have to pay for this by themselves!


Program of events:



7.05.2019 - Guests’ arrival to St. Petersburg, accommodation in families of organization members.

8.05.2019

10.00 – press-conference with honorable guests and descendants of the Arctic Convoy in ITAR-TASS

11.30 – laying flowers to the monument of the Arctic convoys’ sailors

12.00 - 13.30 – visit to the Makarov College museum

14.00 – 17.00 – holding a conference (venue to be confirmed)

17.00 – 18.00 – dinner

19.00 – attending a theatre performance - either opera or ballet

10.00-12.00 – visit to the Artillery Museum, laying flowers to the monument of the Sherman tank near the Peter and Paul fortress

12.00-14.00 – walking around the city, lunch

14.00 - 16.00 – participating in the “Immortal Regiment” memorial parade

17.00 - 21.00 – round table on board “Icebreaker Krasin”, buffet, musical evening

10.05.2019 – cultural program, bus tour to Kronstadt, Tsarskoye Selo (Pushkin) with visit to museums (Catherine Palace etc.)

11.05.2019 – cultural program in small groups, free time


12.05.2019 – guests' departure, the end of the program

This event is for all Serving or Ex Merchant Navy Seamen. The Venue is next to Cleethorpes Railway Station and close to cheap local B&B's. If you fancy a day full of Lantern Swinging, Laughter, a Maritime quiz, and a good old Sing Song then come and join us.

The Danish church in Newcastle upon Tyne.

This year's commemoration of the Danish War Sailors who sailed for the Allied merchant navies during World War Two. Several thousand went to British/French ports after the German attack on Denmark on 9th April 1945. After the fall of France, they were given Newcastle upon Tyne in North East England as their home port. Between 1940 and 1945, almost two thousand lost their lives in Allied service. We have their memorial in St. Nicholas Cathedral in Newcastle upon Tyne and will remember the fallen sailors and their surviving comrades at a service in the Cathedral on Sunday 5th May 2019 at 12 noon.

The Old Head of Kinsale Signal Tower


On Tuesday next the 7th. May there will be a cermony to commemorate the 104th anniversary of the sinking of the Lusitania with the loss of nearly 1200 lives. The cermony will begin at 2pm so please come early.

The Old Head Lighthouse tour/open days (via bus only) and Signal Tower, Lusitania Museum/Memorial Garden including exhibits from RMS Lusitania will held on Saturday & Sunday May 25/26th from 9AM-5PM (approx TBC). Cost Adults €10 which includes ALL ADMISSIONS & COACH. Family rates available too.


The Signal Tower Cafe will be OPEN on the day as it is most days.

Join us to commemorate the 104th anniversary of the sinking of the Lusitania on Tuesday 7 May, 1.45pm by the Lusitania propeller on the quayside.

The face of a Merchant Seafarer Lost to the Sea

The Merchant Seaman’s Memorial in Cardiff Bay is in the form of a sleeping face fused with a ship’s hull, made by riveting plates of metal together. The technique is one traditional to early iron and steel ship building. The sculptor Brian Fell, whose own father had been a merchant seaman, was commissioned to create the work in 1994 by Cardiff Bay Arts Trust, Cardiff Bay Development Corporation, Merchant Navy Memorial Committee and Cardiff County Council.

Bill Henke MBE (founder of The Merchant Navy Association Wales) spent years raising funds for the construction of the memorial. There is a plaque recognizing his work outside the circular mosaic base of the memorial on which are inscribed the words:

IN MEMORY OF THE MERCHANT SEAFARERS FROM THE PORTS OF BARRY PENARTH CARDIFF WHO DIED IN TIMES OF WAR

Each May, The Merchant Navy Association Wales organises a remembrance service to mark the anniversary of the dedication of this Memorial. This year the service will be held at the Memorial (in Cardiff Bay) on 25 May 2019 at 11.00 am. The service will be multifaith to reflect the sacrifices made by seafarers from all nations and will have readings from the Tanakh, the Bible, and the Koran.

Attendees at the service will include representatives from associated veterans’ groups: The Royal British Legion, The Mission to Seafarers, Royal National Lifeboat Institute, Maritime Volunteer Service, The Merchant Navy Associations of Swansea and Newport, Sea Cadets, the Royal Naval Reserve, local shipping companies, and the Maritime and Coastguard Agency.
