To mark the anniversary of Lusitania’s sinking on 7 May, Jordan Connerty, intern with the Maritime History team, has written this tribute:
“RMS Lusitania was more than a ship, for some she was a local icon for the people of Liverpool, sailing from Liverpool to New York with Liverpool being her main port. Thousands came to watch her set sail on her maiden voyage and Lusitania was given the nickname Lusi because of her strong links to Liverpool.
The tragic demise of Lusi is still one of the worst maritime disasters in history, taking the lives of 1,191 passengers and crew. Let us remember what Lusitania was to Liverpool. More then a ship she’s a child of Liverpool, a local icon of Liverpool, and will always be Lusi and the greyhound of the seas”
