Wreath-laying ceremony at the Arctic Convoys Memorial in Loch-Ewe
On 11 May 2019 commemorative events dedicated to the 74th anniversary of the Victory in the WWII took place in the North-West of Scotland on the shores of Loch-Ewe. It was Loch Ewe where many vessels that would travel to and from the Soviet Union were stationed during the war.
Scottish veterans of the Arctic Convoys arrived at the ceremony, accompanied by an honorary escort of motorcyclists, representing the veteran organization "Royal British Legion".
The wreaths were laid by the Consul General of Russia in Edinburgh Andrey A.Pritsepov, the Consul General of Germany in Edinburgh Jens-Peter Voss, the Lord-Lieutenant of Ross and Cromarty Ms Janet Bowen, representatives of the local community and veteran organizations. The participants of the ceremony highly appreciated joint laying of wreaths by the Russian and the German Consuls General as a tribute to all those who fell in fight against fascism and gratitude for the liberation of Europe from Nazism.
The Museum of Arctic Convoys in Aultbea has received two sculptures of the veterans made of Siberian pine by renowned sculptor from Tomsk, merited artist of Russia Leonty Usov. Immortalized in busts, the Russian and British veterans – Vadim Shamritskiy and Victor Walker – will continue to stand guard shoulder to shoulder.
