Her name was SS.........:
She was a lady of the waves.
Whatever they did name her - she was named with pride,
her duty as a mistress, to travel far and wide.
Carry safe her payload where ever she may go,
a nations blood, a life line, our saviour, her cargo.
Never meant to face a foe, born to obey her master,
is maybe, why we call her she and warn her ‘gainst disaster.
She could be stern and would not bow, to danger in a war,
many heroines of such times, now sail the oceans floor.
Often old and past it, often called a tramp,
an old boiler or a virgin, often cold and damp.
Elegant yet rusted, she sailed the seven seas,
graced the Ocean railway, she could be a tease.
When hunted by a Wolf pack, future looking dim,
she could not run from danger, her fate was often grim.
Although she could be evasive and often had much luck,
cruelly, fully laden, she was a sitting duck.
For some she was a coffin, no grave above the waves,
recorded and remembered more and more these days.
Those that were spared the cruel sea, remember most of all,
brave there friends and heroes, “Those that died to save us all”.
Those who sailed upon her, her master, crew and others,
family left behind at home, treated ships like mothers.
“Respect and love all maidens, treat them like your sister”,
She will be true as long as you, do not forsake her mister.
Many that promised to remember them are no longer here,
ships sail on in a different world, devoid of pain and fear.
Loved ones passage eternally with those brave men once more,
sister ships cruise near them, they are the ocean floor.
It was a hard way to earn a crust, especially during War,
Never did they fail to sail, “We must remember them all”.
The many that survived attacks by those that would do them harm,
Along with those that perished – to bring us peace and calm.
KG.
Will ask Joe to comment on my first work, she is not complete and requires fine tuning but, I try.
In Memory of:
Those Good Men and the women and children, still not Home From The Sea and those of all lost from this world with “No Known Grave but the Sea” the many just not remembered or just forgot and un-commemorated in an unattended grave.
We shall Remember Them.
