Dear Sirs,
I wonder if the Royal Mint would consider a coin or coins commemorating the British Merchant Navy. This follows a recent request for a Merchant Navy stamp or stamps being considered and a supportive feature / report in this months Stanley Gibbons Magazine.
Much information can be furnished and would love the opportunity to discuss the proposal further. I realise nothing would occur overnight and all has to be considered, approved, planned etc but, ask that the Merchant Navy be both considered and remembered in thoughts for future coin design and issue.
I would be pleased to discuss all further and would appreciate the response / reply from those concerned and in a position to consider and move forward this request.
Obviously this would mean a lot to family and friends, loved ones, surviving members of the "Forgotten Service" and a simple tribute to those that died to save us all, remembering the brave acts of all seamen in and out of conflict. LEST WE FORGET.
A quote from the British Merchant Navy website - Over 30,000 men of the British Merchant Navy were lost between 1939-1945. For our Merchant sailors there was no phony war that the people of Britain lived through in those early days.
On September 3rd 1939, a few hours after war had been declared against Germany, the first shipping casualty occurred with the sinking of the Donaldson Line passenger ship, Athenia, and the loss of 112 passengers and crew. For almost six years there was barely a day went by without the loss of merchant ships and their crews.
The gratitude owed to these men is finally being recognized with the introduction of the official 'Merchant Navy Day', designated the 3rd of September every year, the first one was held in September 2000. [end quote]
Regards,
Keith
Possibly all may add weight to the request by writing own supportive requests similar to the above.
