SPARKS
We were two days out of Capetown- And sailing all alone- Crew thinking if their loved ones- Who were waiting back at home.
And no one missed his family more- Than sparks, who all knew well- Whose key might be our lifeline- Across the rolling swell.
Then early in the morning- In a great explosion's roar- That tin fish ripped us open- Far from our homeland shore.
All was lost, the ship afire- And settling by the bow- Abandon ship, the order came- No time to tarry now.
We lost the first assistant- And the bosun in the blast- But up there sending signals- Old sparks was standing fast.
All around him raging fire- The 88s came crashing in- But still he keyed our lifeline- Amid the battle's din.
Old sparks, he was a hero- And no one would deny- No greater gift can one man give- Than for his shipmates die.
