The annual event was founded in 2018 in the wake the #Windrushscandal, when many of those invited to the UK suddenly found themselves on the wrong side of immigration laws that, unbeknown to them, had changed around them. The treatment of the #WindrushGeneration is part of the UK's long history of racial injustice - Westminster was far too slow to answer the moment with action. Compounded injustices over generations have created deep frustrations and hurt, which the #BlackLivesMatter movement powerfully spoke to. As a nation we must continue to promote and safeguard our principles of understanding, inclusivity and equality for all. Today, let’s take the chance to show solidarity and support for the hardships faced by many since coming to this country and acknowledge that while injustices persist, just saying, ‘thank you’ will not be enough. We must repeat the urgent call for action from the UK Government to ensure that such a national scandal never happens again.

Windrush: Priti Patel promises to implement recommendations.
23 June 2020The Windrush generation is named after the ship which brought workers to the UK in 1948. An estimated 500,000 people arrived in the UK from Caribbean countries between 1948 and 1971. Although they were granted indefinite leave to remain in 1971 thousands of their children were travelling on their parents' passports, without their own documents. In 2012, as part of measures to tackle illegal immigration those without documents were asked for evidence in order to continue working, access services or remain in the UK. This led to some being detained or even removed from the UK despite having live in the country for years. The recommendations of a review into the Windrush scandal will be implemented in full, Home Secretary Priti Patel has said.LINK
