The paddle steamer Barry was built for and named after the town in Wales, in 1907. She saw service in two World Wars. She was lost on July 5th 1941 during a then enemy air attack off the North East coast.
Originally, intended for excursion cruising to and from Bristol Channel Ports she was heroic in wartime and gave much pleasure to the public, day tripping in peacetime.
Barry recalls and remembers the many lost from the town and surrounding areas on notable dates throughout the year, today is a sad anniversary of a particular little ship that bore originally the name of the town and served it’s community.
The vessel was known to many locally as the PS. Barry, she was lost as a Royal Navy vessel: HMS Snaefell, She suffered three casualties when she was sunk:
Not of this town, remembered today: Naval crew members Brett, Leggett and Walker.
Many seamen left from the port of Barry during conflict never to return, we do remember them.
