V J DAY, 15 August 1945
They welcomed the end of bombing and guns, Awaited homecoming of husbands or sons, Victory achieved but with terrible cost, The sacrifice made, so many were lost.
Rejoicing there was when sirens were sounded, And relief in the land by dancing unbounded, Lights were switched on for the first time in years, A boost for the nation through hope and the tears.
They played the “Last Post” and tunes of the band, Linking their arms and holding of hands, We must remember with most of them gone, The love and the anguish so many years on.
