VIA: Neutral Shores, Ireland and the Battle of the Atlantic
14 October 1940 and the Armed Merchant Cruiser (AMC) HMS CHESHIRE was returning to ocean escort duties after escorting the damaged troop ship ORONSAY back to port following an attack on 08 October. During the evening when 190’ west of Malin Head the ship was hit by a torpedo from U-137. Damaged most of the crew were taken off by attending warships and was taken in tow, eventually being beached in Belfast Lough to prevent the ship sinking.
The North West Approaches were becoming increasingly dangerous for large ships like the AMC‘s and in November 1940 the Admiralty issues ordered that AMC’s should leave their convoys 24 hours before arrival at the rendezvous positions to avoid the patrolling U-boats.
