VIA: Neutral Shores, Ireland and the Battle of the Atlantic is in Donegal, Ireland.
On 26 Oct 1940 the unescorted EMPRESS OF BRITAIN was struck by two 250kg bombs from a German Fw200 Condor aircraft of the 2./KG 40 piloted by Oblt Bernhard Jope (awarded the Knight Cross on 30 Dec 1940) and caught fire 70' northwest of Aran Island, County Donegal.
On 28 October U-32 that had followed the burning passenger ship and the tugs rendering assistance for 24 hours, finally sank her northwest of Bloody Foreland, County Donegal. This was the largest merchant ship sunk during the war.
