VIA: Neutral Shores, Ireland and the Battle of the Atlantic / County Waterford.St. Georges Channel, again a dangerous stretch of water that did not differentiate between neutral and belligerent nations. The Irish ship ARDMORE was attacked early in the morning of 05 November 1940, the ship was machine gunned but there was no casualties. On 11 November ARDMORE departed Cork on a voyage back to Fishguard, the ship never arrived. Several days later wreckage and carcasses of livestock the ship had been carrying came ashore on the Waterford coast. The wreck would only be discovered in 1995 south of the Saltee Islands with damage that indicated the vessel had struck a mine.
