17 November 1940, there shortage of escort vessels was a continual problem during this period for all convoys transiting through the Northwest Approaches. Escorts would transfer between convoy’s depending on their location and the threat of nearby U-boats. By noon on the 17th two destroyers from OB-241, HMS VETERAN and VERITY were ordered to leave that convoy, return to refuel at Londonderry and then rendezvous with inbound HG-46. They would not arrive in time as later that evening SAINT GERMAIN (A) and VERONICA (B) would be sunk. VIA: Neutral Shores, Ireland and the Battle of the Atlantic
