Convoy SL-53 had been harassed by FW200 attacks since 15 November when the convoy commodores ship, APAPA was attacked and sunk. There was another attack on a straggler KINDET. Then on the 18th two more stragglers would be attacked. NESTLEA was sunk, 22 survivors landed at Ballycotton County Cork, later in the afternoon BIELA was attacked and damaged.
