“With A Little Help From My Merchant Navy Friends”.

I have never ever thought of writing a book, but recent health scares make me think of a lasting legacy, whether it would ever go to print is another matter and all advice will be sought and the same advice considered before going further.

The intention would be built upon my liaison with yourselves, those that post on site and may offer material, some posts on site that are extremely interesting etc, some that have published already. I do not consider myself an author, I try hard to aid and assist, but am no Maritime Historian, but what I am good at is research and helping where I can.

Recently I was asked and permission was gained to copy from a book, a lot of material that I guess may have been found and replicated in some format, but as time was of the essence for an exhibition, someone that I hold in total high esteem, granted such permission to use the material from a recent his publication.

I could never have produced the same however freely available and although my OCR programme let me down, having to type every word from the selected pages also made me take in so much more than my usual skim reading. I more than likely took in more and appreciate the work of the author even more so.

I have no intention of stealing the work of other’s, rather the thought would be to work in liaising with all that may be interested. The working title would say it all: With a little help from my Merchant Navy Friends.

If the concept ever took off and was successful in any way, every penny would go to a fund set up to back the work of the like of Billy McGee, A central fund that is my pipe dream, but could be achieved?

I would like to see a way of having a fund for such worthy work and cut out the need to continually beg. This would not replace a need to money raise as an amount would need to be in place. However, prior to the next quest, fund raising etc would need to replace the sum to enable another venture.

The intent would be that such work could commence without the delay. This would not replace a need to raise the funds, but would be a kind of loan, while the monies could be found.

What I seek, I guess is some encouragement as this would be new to me, I usually just get on with my own thing within my comfort zone, but have erred before and no doubt will do so again. Just looking not only for some help from my MN friends, but as ever I work for remembrance and awareness and would love you on board. All thoughts and comments welcomed.

I would love a little help from my friends, I have a wealth of information, probably gained mainly from yourselves etc. Would love to ensure it continues, can you aid and assist further. All credit will be given to those that contribute etc. A differing concept and possibly an unusual request, I am up for it, are you?

The concept would be a little like a compilation CD, highliting the authors concerned and their work etc. Further promoting the source of material and hopefully leading to increased sales of the original book.

“With a little help from my Merchant Navy Friends".


“With a little help from my Merchant Navy Friends" is no rip off of or from the Beatles song of the same name but, the best chosen words for a working title of a proposed project, much does depend on those MN friends that have, will or may contribute further works.

The aim is to aid awareness of the British Merchant Navy the brave men of this seemingly Forgotten Service and kick start with luck a long awaited fund towards the work required and the cost's of some forms of further remembrance, grave restoration, monuments etc.

As I commence and plan the format and appeal for more content, I must add this is not a request for money at least not as yet. That may occur later to top up the hopeful fund if all goes to plan.

I am looking at the moment towards a pre launch date of June 2011, with a going more live by MN Day. The project and objective will be both on going and long term.

The concept is a fund raiser, the project is to make available all information that sits on my hard drive that may assist others, be of interest and be further aided by the help of “My Merchant Navy Friends”.
Some onboard already seek to pass all on and ensure that the material survives them, this I look to do by donating the initial and updated versions to all relevant bodies and hopefully, this will include libraries and schools etc. However some editing may need to occur from what may occur in the full / salty versions.

With luck and with a little help, the intention is to both raise further awareness, record all for all time and set up a general fund with any donations towards the anticipated costs involved in further remembrance. A National / International body will be required to deal with this aspect as I have no wish to personally gain or be seen to gain from this proposal. All if any must be and will be fully accounted for.

Obviously there will be some cost involved. I look at self financing initially and release would be initially on DVD / CD formats. Hence the cost per copy would be a blank disk, some ink and paper and postage and package.

This may eventually just become a free download and a desired rather than requested donation.

The DVD / CD format initially steers away from the costs of publishing initially, although with content and interest received the ground work and content will be in place for this by then if this may occur.

I fully intend to liaise with MN National, Wales and all branches if not also internationally for both content and any required permissions, this with a view to appointing a body to oversee all at some stage.

Although I do hope to see some local benefit such as the remembrance of PS Barry, Captain Cecil Foster of Trevessa and to ensure that all MN seamen are remembered. A bona fide elected body will decide on what occurs. Inspired by the many great deeds by Billy McGee and others, I attempt to assist in more and future works.
