Since dispersing convoy OB-252 had been harassed by U-boat’s with two ships sunk between December 6th and 7th. 08 December 1940 and the Luftwaffe were patrolling the Western Approaches, the British cargo ship TREVERBYN was attacked but escaped without any damage. TREVERBYN would not survive the war and was sunk on 21 October 1941, there were no survivors. Further north off the Donegal coast, Oberleutnant zur See Hans-Peter Hinsch commanding U-140 sunk two ships. First the Finnish sailing ship PENANG was attacked and sunk, then later in the evening not far to the east, The British cargo ship ASHCREST adrift with a broken rudder caused by the winter storms was sighted and sunk. There were no survivors from either of these two attacks. VIA: Neutral Shores, Ireland and the Battle of the Atlantic
