Seafarers UKThe Seafarers' Charity's (formerly Seafarers UK) new brand makes what we do, and where we work, clearer. But we also wanted to celebrate our 103-year-old heritage. It all began in 1917, when King George’s Fund for Sailors was formed to support #seafarers and their families during #WW1. King George V supported the Fund with an establishing donation of £5,200. A lot has changed since then, but seafarers have continued to work in uniquely dangerous, and at times lonely, environments for many months at a time. They've been protecting our shores, transporting over 90% of UK's imports by sea and catching our fish. And so for over 100 years, we have been responding to seafarers' needs through our network of charity and delivery partners. In 2020, we released £2 million in grant funding to support merchant seafarers and UK fishers through the COVID19 crisis. It’s the largest amount promised by a single maritime charity and reflects our long history of protecting those who work at sea. Today, our new brand celebrates this heritage with a newly designed King George's Fund for Sailors stamp.
