VIA: Western Approaches HQ - The Battle of the Atlantic Experience"The greatest convoy battle of all time" That's how the German Kriegsmarine referred to the battle that took place in March 1943 involving two convoys heading to the UK, HX229 and SC122. Between 16 and 18 March, three Wolf Packs, totalling nearly 40 U-boats attacked the two convoys and sank 21 merchant ships. Despite the best efforts of the meagre escorts and the VLR (very longe range) aircraft of Coastal Command, only one U-boat was lost.
