July 1941 - A low flying German aircraft dropped a parachute mine onto the Barry Graving Dock. Three of the five bays in the boiler shop were flattened in the blast.
The MV "Highgate" broke her moorings and damaged her starboard side in the blast. The mate on night watch in the bridge was knocked down by the blast and badly injured. Sadly, he later died in hospital. He was the only air raid fatality in Barry in the Second World War.
