The Battle of the Atlantic is often seen as Britain and her Allies against German U boats but on this day in 1944 a Japanese submarine was sunk by the US Navy off the Cape Verde Islands.
It was one of 2 Japanese submarines to be sunk in the Atlantic and was a German built U-boat returning to Japan with a precious cargo of resources including Mercury and blue prints for the latest U boats and the jet engined meteor fighter planes.
