Western Approaches HQ - The Battle of the Atlantic Experience

Yesterday saw the unfurling of four flags outside our entrance. The Union flag, the Red Ensign of the Merchant Navy, the White Ensign of the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force Ensign.

Representatives of each organisation were invited to unfurl their respective flag.

A hidden gem in the centre of the city also know as the Liverpool War Museum. This was the underground command centre for the Battle of the Atlantic.

The Royal Navy White Ensign, the Royal Air Force Ensign and the Merchant Navy Red 'duster' Ensign now proudly fly outside our entrance.

Throughout the war, Western Approaches was the headquarters where all three of these services worked together to ensure vital supplies could flow across the Atlantic, in spite of perilous conditions and enemy attacks.

As we prepare to safely reopen our doors tomorrow, we are proud to offer free entry to any person who serves or served in the Royal Navy, the Royal Air Force or the Merchant Navy.

If you served for any of these organisations during the Second World War, please contact us in advance and we will provide you with a free guided tour, will arrange outside parking and provide refreshments at the end of your tour.
