VIA: Old Barry & The Vale Missions to Seamen, photo of the 'Flying Angel' caravan, exterior view, Cardiff 1966. Cardiff’s Mission to Seamen was established in 1863 to provide spiritual and social support to sailors from all over the world, whose ships were docked in Cardiff. In 1965 the Mission was based in a caravan at Roath Basin. They held dances there and Seamen would visit to relax, make phone calls and buy cigarettes. The volunteer states that it was “All voluntary work - always was.” In 2017 there is no Mission to Seafarer’s (as it is now known) Centre in Cardiff but there is a full time South Wales Chaplain to the Mission to Seafarers who is supported by volunteers.
