CONFRONTATION
The LYNROWEN sailed from the River Plate, In the South Atlantic, met her fate. She was on her course and homeward bound, When a German raider laid her down.
It was the German cruiser KARLSRHUE, That sank the ship and took the crew. They took a load of sugar, The Captain's wife and her friend too.
They put them aboard the CREFELD, The ship bulging at her seams. Four hundred nineteen prisoners, Thought of freedom in their dreams.
They were set free at Tanerife, For home and England they were bound. The Captain and his loving wife, Returned home all safe and sound.
Ian Adrian Millar
Written with my Great Aunt and Uncle in mind. Great Uncle Arthur Jones was Master of the S/S LYNROWEN when his ship was intercepted and sunk by the German cruiser KARLSRHUE.
This was also the first time he took his wife Winifred with him on a voyage. This was in 1914 near the start of the 14-18 War.
