A day to salute Merchant Navy
IT'S Merchant Navy Day today, when the UK's historical and ongoing dependence on our merchant seafarers is commemorated. Ships and sailors are essential to our way of life. Some 95% of UK international trade is by ship; 24% of internal trade is by coastal vessel around our islands.
Pause to reflect on Merchant Navy Day on the oceans deep, the restless waves, the perils of the sea, constants throughout maritime history. Remember those who go down to the sea in ships and do business in great waters: remember, especially, the thousands of merchant ships and tens of thousands of merchant seafarers, including fishermen, lost both in peacetime maritime disasters and in conflicts.
Fly the Red Ensign and salute our merchant seafarers.
