On this day 80 years ago the Royal New Zealand Navy was founded. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission commemorates almost 250 Royal New Zealand Navy service personnel who died during the Second World War. 150 of these are commemorated upon the New Zealand Naval Memorial in Devonport, Auckland. The memorial commemorates by name those who died in all parts of the world during the Second World War and who have no known grave; the greater part lost their lives at sea, but some died in captivity while prisoner of war.
