The Rohilla rescue took place over three days during World War I, starting on 30 October 1914. The hospital ship was enroute to help the wounded at Dunkirk when she hit rocks off Whitby. What followed is a remarkable story of endurance, involving seven lifeboats from four stations. 84 people were lost, 145 were saved. Incredibly, one of the nurses saved, Mary Kezia Roberts, had also been rescued from the Titanic.
During the War we launched 1,808 times. Watch to learn about just some of these amazing rescues. We will never forget the countless acts of humanity that shone out during that conflict – including those of RNLI lifeboat crews on the home front.
