They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them.

IN THE WAR AT SEAFollowing up on on Armistice Day, please remember the sacrifice of our Merchant Navy in both World Wars. The losses during both wars are truly staggering; 17,000 seamen died during the First World War and 3,305 merchant vessels were sunk. In the Second World War 185,000 men and women served at sea; 32,248 lost their lives, a death rate proportionately higher than any of the armed forces. Without their sacrifice the food, fuel and raw materials needed to survive and wage war against Germany would never have reached Britain. We Remember them. This propaganda postcard, featuring an illustration by Leonard Raven Hill, was published in 1917 and summed up the resolute attitude of the merchant seaman towards the U-Boats.
