VIA: Caroline ClopetToday, in Cathédrale Saint Louis, Les Invalides, Paris. Remembrance Ceremony, Royal British Legion Paris Branch. Ceremony in Paris, The Merchant Navy standard and MN represented. Remembering all lost and so many men in both World Wars and other areas of conflict around the world. Many Merchant Navy ships directly helped the Royal Navy and Army by transporting Arms. The MN was declared the Fourth Service by King George V. It is important to remember the sacrifice of the Seamen of the Merchant Navy, who brought troops, weapons and supplies to the war zones in both World Wars, and the Falklands. By the end of the First World War, more than 3,000 British flagged merchant and fishing vessels had been sunk and nearly 15,000 merchant seamen had died. During the Second World War, 4,700 British-flagged ships were sunk and more than 29,000 merchant seamen died.
