The Story of the Shetland BusGermany's Invasion of Norway On 9 April 1940, German forces invaded Norway. The Norwegians were unprepared and the country soon fell to the invaders. King Haakon VII with the Norwegian Royal Family and government went into exile in London. Thousands of Norwegians escaped to the west, mostly in fishing boats, in order to continue the fight for a free Norway. For the majority, Shetland was their landfall. Birth of the 'Shetland Bus' LINK

VIA: The Secret WW2 Learning Network The last crew member of the Shetland Bus operations has died. Jakob Strandheim was 101. He took part in 56 missions to carry refugees out of Nazi-occupied Norway to Shetland, as well as supplies and equipment to his country to help sabotage operations.
