Germany's Invasion of Norway
On 9 April 1940, German forces invaded Norway. The Norwegians were unprepared and the country soon fell to the invaders. King Haakon VII with the Norwegian Royal Family and government went into exile in London. Thousands of Norwegians escaped to the west, mostly in fishing boats, in order to continue the fight for a free Norway. For the majority, Shetland was their landfall.
