VIA: The History of Wales Born on this day 1882 in Eglwys Rhos, Caernarfonshire, Harold Lowe, the Fifth Officer on RMS Titanic when it sank in April 1912. He was described by survivors as 'the real hero of the Titanic' for his role in the evacuation. He was the only officer to return to the ship to search for survivors. He also rescued a sinking lifeboat and towed another boat to safety. On his return to Barmouth, 1,300 people attended a reception held in his honour and he was presented with a commemorative gold watch. He served in the Royal Navy Reserve during the First World War and saw service in Vladivostok during the Russian Revolution and Civil War. During World War II he served as an Air Raid Warden until his death in 1944.
