VIA: Western Approaches HQ - The Battle of the Atlantic ExperienceOn this day in 1917, the Women’s Royal Naval Service was founded for the First World War. It was disbanded two years later, then re-introduced in 1939 at the start of the Second World War. During the war, 102 Wrens were killed in action. By 1944 there were 75,000 members. Of the people who staffed Western Approaches Command, 80% were women, many of whom were members of the WRNS. The WRNS remained in place until 1993, when it was integrated into the Royal Navy.
