NEW INTERNATIONAL MUSEUM PARTNERSHIP ANNOUNCED TO COMMEMORATE THE ARCTIC CONVOYSTo commemorate 80 years since the first Arctic Convoys of the Second World War set sail, an international Memorandum of Understanding has been signed between Western Approaches Museum in Liverpool, UK and the Northern Maritime Museum in Archangelsk, Russia. The Arctic Convoys first left Liverpool in August 1941 loaded with military supplies to support Russian efforts in fighting Nazi Germany. The ships undertook what was described by Winston Churchill as “the worst journey in the world” across frozen Arctic seas patrolled by German U-Boats before arriving in the arctic port of Arkhangelsk in Northern Russia. The two museums are working in partnership with the British Council Cultural and Education Section of the British Embassy in Moscow on a program of events that will share the story of the convoys across both countries, build deeper links between the two cities and highlight cultural commonality between the UK and Russia.
