VIA: Western Approaches HQ - The Battle of the Atlantic Experience Today marks 80 years since the attack on the naval base at Pearl Harbour by the Imperialist Japanese Navy. Within two hours of the initial attack, over 2,000 American servicemen and women had been killed, 21 US warships damaged, and 188 aircraft destroyed. This led to the United States formal entry into the Second World War. Although the USA had been involved in some convoy protection prior to this, the subsequent declaration of war by Germany on the USA heralded a new and significant phase in the Battle of the Atlantic.
