March to Remember
Unique event to coincide with Armed Forces Weekend 2011
The organisers of a major weekend event to celebrate and commemorate the nation’s Armed Forces past and present have created a unique opportunity to raise funds for the Royal British Legion.
Trowbridge, the county town of Wiltshire, will host the first national March to Remember on the evening of Friday 24th June 2011 exclusively for WW2 Allied Re-enactors as the opening event in the weekends programme.
Re-enactors make a significant contribution towards helping to keep alive the spirit of remembrance of the wartime generation and they do this through educational displays, supporting veterans groups and raising money for service charities. In addition, they attend events across the country throughout the year.
‘We felt that it was time that their contribution was recognised’ said Maryrose Mantle who is the lead organiser of the event. ‘We are extending an invitation for all Allied re-enactors, groups, families and individuals to register to take part. We are hoping to attract a large number of participants and there will be bands, a formal salute and a presentation of certificates to everyone who takes part’ she added.
The March, which commences at 7 pm, takes a one mile route through the town and will end at the Park, where the main weekend celebrations will take place. It is hoped that the public will line the route and give the marchers their full support.
‘To our knowledge this is the only march of its type and we are delighted to be hosting it here in Wiltshire’ said Maryrose. ‘Registration is open now for re-enactors’
The Mayor of Trowbridge will take the salute and it is expected that the Mayor of Wootton Bassett will also be part of the official saluting party. Tom Lewis, a re-enactor said that ‘The invitation to the Mayor of Wootton Bassett is our way of thanking that town for their acts of remembrance in recent years. Our cause is a shared one’.
