On this day 161 years ago, a great storm ravaged the east coast, wrecking over 200 ships. Whitby lifeboat was struck by a freak wave and capsized. Every single crew member was lost, apart from Henry Freeman - the only one wearing a new cork lifejacket. Despite the tragic loss of his crew mates, Henry continued as a lifeboatman. He later became the Whitby Coxswain, helping to save over 300 lives. This iconic portrait of that remarkable man was taken by pioneering photographer Frank Meadow Sutcliffe. RNLI
