On this day 11th February 1891, A BRUTAL LIFE AT SEA
Giacomo Gennaro an Italian and Joseph Concersion a Brazilian, brutally attacked another seaman George Frederick Burton on the Italian ship Miser Nipoti docked in Barry. The Captain ordered Burton be beaten with an iron bar, Gennaro broke Burtons arm and Burton was then placed in leg irons and handcuffed in the Captains cabin. This was punishment for: GOING ASHORE IN BARRY WITHOUT PERMISSION AND STAYING THERE FOR ONE DAY. Police became involved due to the noise and shouting. Dr Neale treated Burtons broken arm. When the case came to court, Gennaro was sentenced to ONE MONTH IN PRISON. Victorian Barry Experience
