Davey Jones' Locker.Davey Jones' Locker is an 18th century sailors term for the evil spirit of the sea or the bottom of the ocean. It is generally considered that Davey is inspired by St. David who was invoked by Welsh sailors and Jones comes from Jonah, the Biblical figure swallowed by a whale. The earliest known reference occurs in Daniel Defoe's ' Four Years Voyage of Capt. George Roberts' published in 1726; Some of Loe's Company said, They would look out some things, and give me along with me when I was going away; but Ruffel told them, they should not, for he would toss them all into Davy Jones's Locker if they did.
