RNLISince 4 March 1824, our mission has been to save lives at sea and it’s thanks to your continuing support that we’re still answering the call to rescue almost 200 years later. On This Day in 1824, Sir William Hillary’s vision for a service dedicated to saving lives at sea became a reality. Over 30 significant public figures met in a fashionable London tavern to support the fledgling RNLI at the inaugural public meeting. The crowd unanimously passed 12 resolutions which still stand as part of the RNLI’s charter almost 200 years later. Initially named the ‘Royal National Institution for the Preservation of Life from Shipwreck’ the Institution’s name was changed in 1854 to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution – the RNLI – as it is known today. The Royal National Lifeboat Institution Memorial at the Arboretum is designed to reflect both the work of the RNLI crews and the relationship between crew members, a rescued person and all their families whose lives become interwoven during a rescue. The memorial embodies the journey of one member of a volunteer crew. It celebrates and recognises the work of the RNLI and encourages visitors to reflect on the sacrifice of those who have lost their lives saving others. National Memorial Arboretum.
