VIA: Life and Ships in the Merchant Navy⚓️ SS Canberra' was an ocean liner, named On This Day 17 March 1958, after the federal capital of Australia, Canberra.... She was launched on 16 March 1960, sponsored by Dame Pattie Menzies, GBE, wife of the then Prime Minister of Australia, Robert Menzies. She appeared in the 1971 James Bond movie "Diamonds are Forever" and the 1982 Falklands War she served as a troop ship. PHOTO - Leaving Sydney Harbour for the last time, SS Canberra bids farewell to a city it called into many times over the years in 1997.
