VIA: Remembering world war 1 in 2014 100 years Fascinating Facts of the Great War. On 28th March 1915, while near the Lightship Maas in the North Sea & in order to stop being torpedoed, Captain Charles Fryatt of the Steam Ship SS Brussels, tried to ram German U-Boat U-33. He was awarded a gold watch by the British Admiralty. Captain Fryatt was captured by the Germans on 23rd June 1916 and on 27th July, he was executed for attacking U-33 as a non-combatant.
