VIA: Thomas Joseph SimpsonIdentification of sea mine found in Romanian waters on Monday March 28, 2022. Romanian sailors neutralized a drifting naval mine 39 miles away from Capul Midia. Soviet-era design YaM, or MYaM. Old Soviet-era mine. Moored contact mine. Designed for use in rivers and inshore. According to one weapons analyst it is unclear if this was due to poor placement by the Ukrainian Navy or the Russians cutting the moorings without disposing. This type of mine was originally put into service with the USSR in 1943. However, the markings tell us that it was refurbished by the Ukrainian company "Technocluster" in 2020. More details are obvious from the photo that this mine still has spring activated safety caps on all three prongs. Steel cable that holds them in place can be seen. In the opinion of one expert the mine was released without anchor just to float freely. Someone who did it didn’t know what he was doing had to cut cable. Source of the mine is unknown.
