PENARTH LIFEBOAT CATCHES UP WITH POLAR EXPLORER NANSENPenarth’s lifeboat crew has been getting up close-up view this morning of a classic sailing ship of yesteryear – the German square-rigger Fridjtof Nansen. The 102-year-old three-masted vessel appeared through the grey mist of the Bristol Channel this morning like a ghost emerging from the past. The Fridtjof Nansen was originally built as a gaff-rigged freight schooner in 1919 under the name ‘Edith’ and has changed both owners and names on various occasions. The ship has a history of different activities, including – towards the end of World War II – transporting refugees. In 1992 she was converted into a three-masted topsail schooner and christened Fridtjof Nansen at the Peene shipyard by the granddaughter of the eponymous Norwegian scientist In March this year Fridtjof Nansen was acquired by the Irish sail training charity “Seas Your Future“, for use as a youth sail training vessel. The ship was spotted this morning on her way to Albion Dock, Bristol, where she will undergo an extensive refit throughout the Spring – during which time she will be open to the public. LINK
