On April 14, 1912, RMS TITANIC collided with an iceberg in the North Atlantic at 2340 Zulu and began sinking. RMS TITANIC sunk 370 nmi (690 km) south-southeast of Newfoundland.The ship went under two hours and 40 minutes later with the loss of 1,514 lives. RMS TITANIC was a British passenger liner, operated by White Star Line. RMS TITANIC sank in the North Atlantic Ocean on April 15, 1912 after striking an iceberg during her maiden voyage from Southampton, England to New York City. Of the estimated 2,224 passengers and crewaboard, more than 1,514 died. RMS TITANIC was the largest ship afloat at the time she entered service and the second of three Olympic-class ocean liners operated by the White Star Line. She was built by the Harland and Wolffship yard in Belfast. Thomas Andrews, who was the chief naval architect of the shipyard at that time, died in the disaster.
