Lusitania commemoration 07 May 2022 1.45pm7 May 2022 marks the 107th anniversary of the sinking of RMS Lusitania, torpedoed by German submarine U20, off the coast of southern Ireland. Each year on 7 May we usually gather alongside the ship’s propeller (one of three salvaged from the wreck) and take part in a commemoration to reflect on those who were lost, how their loss affected their loved ones, and their legacy which still felt by family members who attend. For two years we moved the commemoration online due to the pandemic but this year we will be back at the propeller again. The story of Lusitania is one of our most significant here at the Maritime Museum, Liverpool: LINK

VIA:. Royal British Legion - Paris France 3 May 2019.
On the 1st May 1915, the Lusitania set sail from New York for Britain with 1962 people on board, at a time when German submarine warfare was intensifying. On 7 May 1915 at 2.10pm, the liner was near Kinsale in southern Ireland when she was torpedoed by the German submarine U-20. She sank in under twenty minutes with the loss of 1191 lives.
The sinking of Lusitania was one of the most horrific incidents at sea during the First World War (1914-18) and presaged the United States declaration of war on Germany in 1917.
