Western Approaches HQ - The Battle of the Atlantic ExperienceOn 12th May 1943, Convoy ONS5 arrived at Halifax, Nova Scotia. During its voyage from Liverpool it had suffered attacked from 43 U-boats of Wolfpacks 'Star' and 'Finke'. It had lost 12 ships but the escorts had sunk or severely damaged 13 U-boats. ONS5 is seen as the turning point in the Battle of the Atlantic in the Allies' favour and in fact May 1943 is known as 'Black May' as the Kriegsmarine lost 41 U-boats that month, 25% of its operational fleet. Admiral Donitz recalled his U-boats and declared the battle lost, though they did return with new weapons and tactics and the fight would continue right through to May 1945. May 2023 sees the 80th Anniversary of the Battle of the Atlantic and Liverpool will be at the very centre of the international commemorations.
