In the showcase outside The Archives Centre on the second floor of the Museum we’ve put a few documents relating to the involvement of the Merchant Navy in the Falklands War which took place 40 years ago in 1982.
The British Task Force which was sent to recapture the Islands included a number of Merchant Navy vessels and their crews. The vessel Astronomer from Liverpool shipowners T & J Harrison was among those that sailed and the company archive we hold includes some documents on the subject (B/HAR). We also have a few documents relating to QEII, these include papers in the Sawyer collection (D/SAW) as John Sawyer, MBE oversaw the conversion of the vessel for troop carrying.
