Sacrifices of the Merchant Navy are remembered THE annual Sea Sunday Service, organised by the Barry branch of the Merchant Navy Association, took place at Barry Waterfront’s seafarers’ Anchor Memorial on Sunday, 10 July. The service was led by Father Chris Seaton, chaplain of HMS Cambria. The Vale of Glamorgan Mayor, Cllr Susan Lloyd-Selby, represented both town and county. During the service, there were thanks given to all who work on the seas and those who have served their country in the Merchant Navy. There were a number of visiting veterans from the Royal Navy. There were representatives who work in the docks today, as well as the Coastguard and RNLI. The 11th Barry Sea Scouts and other associated bodies were present. Wreaths were laid and the sea was blessed. Hymns included ‘Eternal Father Strong to Save’ and the national anthems were also sung. The service was well attended on a pleasant afternoon. Music and sound for the event was provided by JPL Sound. Keith Greenway, of the Barry Merchant Navy Association, told the Glamorgan Star that, despite an ageing membership, the Merchant Navy Association (Wales) Barry branch continues to seek new members. He said: “The branch, working with others over the years, has accomplished much and has been involved heavily with Remembrance and more.” He added that many people did not realise the number of casualties taken by the Merchant Navy during World War Two, which was why Remembrance was so important.
